Emergency Aid

Our Emergency Aid Program was originally developed by our organization’s founder James Lenane in 1996 to help Peterborough Residents with emergency financial assistance. However, in 2022, the program was expanded and now provides emergency assistance to residents in the Greater Peterborough area.

Oftentimes people are referred to us by a town welfare officer or a community social worker. We work with our community partners to verify that people are eligible to receive emergency funds. After filling out and submitting our application, a member of the PHSF Board will contact you, gather additional information about your situation, and walk you through next steps.

We provide assistance in four general areas:

Auto Repairs . At this time we work directly with Valley Automotive on auto repairs. Valley is located at 36 Elm Street in Peterborough, across from the Food Pantry. People are asked to get an estimate from Valley BEFORE any work is started on their car. Emergency Aid is provided for repairs necessary to pass inspection or any repairs needed to drive your car safely. We do not reimburse costs but rather agree to work to be done ahead of time. Payment is made directly to Valley and our contribution for repairs is typically around $1,000.

Housing . We may be able to assist with critical home repairs if you are having a difficult time finding funds to cover these expenses. If renting, you will need to provide the name and contact information for the landlord. For home repairs, we would need to see at least one estimate from a reputable company.

Utilities. We can help pay an outstanding and overdue gas or electric utility bill. You will need to provide a copy of your bill showing us the outstanding balance and payment will be made directly to the company.

Medical or dental bills or co-payments. We pay the medical or dental professional directly, in amounts up to $1,000 per person per year.
